This site is designed to serve as a naturalist’s guide to the public lands of North Florida from Pensacola to the Econfina River... – an area commonly called the Florida Panhandle. Far removed from the glitz, overcrowding and theme parks that have taken over so much of the state, this region offers a glimpse of the Florida described by William Bartram two hundred years ago. This relatively small portion of the state contains an amazing array of interconnected
ecosystems. Each of these ecosystems is home to a wide variety of
flora and fauna. From the rolling hills and forests of the northern
panhandle, down the rivers to the estuaries and gulf beaches, much
of this region remains wild and beautiful. There is something here
for any one who enjoys exploring the natural environment.
The Florida Panhandle boasts over 30 state parks, 2 National Wildlife Refuges, a national forest and more - enough to keep an interested naturalist busy for a long time. I am going to visit each site and post a report containing maps, links, pictures and a log of my experiences. In other words, I will blaze the trail to make your visit more enjoyable. So, let’s get started! |
